Therapy results
Having spent 5 weeks in Florida undergoing both Dolphin therapy and Intensive physiotherapy, here is a summary of the progress and results which Dean achieved from the therapy. We are aiming to provide the same therapy to UK Children within the European Union.
On arrival in Florida, Dean's muscle tone relaxed even before therapy started. The Saturday and Sunday was spent relaxing in the heat and spending a lot of time in the nice warm water of the Hotel Swimming pool and Spa.
This relaxed Dean enough to Start his therapy at Dolphin Island Care on the Monday. For children with hypertone, it is very important that the muscles are loose otherwise therapy can be futile and in some cases, painful if the muscles are too tight.
Dean spent 30 minutes in a classroom situation where he was taught to use an eye pointing computer and undergoing Occupational therapy, using paints, books and textures. we hope to provide the same service at Mr Giggles house.
Dean showed a lot of improvement within these two weeks and he gained in confidence which was a great help in the next 3 weeks.
This is when he underwent intensive physiotherapy.
Although this was very hard work for him, 5 hours a day, he made massive improvements in his arm and trunk control.
Although Dean still cannot speak we also feel that his communication improved during this time. From being more alert and intuitively "eye pointing", he was also now able to use his hand to point! Which was something he was previously too tight and unable to do.
This may give people an understanding into why we wish to help other children with severe difficulties.
And with a little help from the Generous people of the UK, I am sure we will be successful in this very worthwhile venture.
